Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

What Does Intense Pulsed Light Treat?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is also referred to as a photo facial. IPL corrects skin imperfections on the face, chest, neck and other body areas including sun damage, redness, rosacea, freckles and vascular issues such as spider veins, port wine stains, leg telangiectasias. In addition, IPL is used to treat conditions of the eye including dry eyes and styes.

How Does IPL Work?

IPL is a laser that uses a broad spectrum of light with customized wavelength range allowing for different applications and skin types. The light penetrates the tissue and is absorbed by either the blood when treating vascular lesions or the melanin when treating pigmented lesions. By creating a thermal ‘injury’ to the skin, the body naturally works to remove the injured tissue therefore resulting in a correction of the skin imperfection. As the strongest and most effective IPL device on the market, the Lumecca by InMode, delivers high-peak performance over other similar devices.

IPL for Eye Conditions

IPL is effective at treating conditions of the eye including dry eyes and eye styes. Patients can receive an eye treatment alone for a small charge. Or, add-on an eye treatment to a full-face IPL treatment allowing them to enhance eye health and revitalize skin in one visit.

IPL for dry eyes: In most cases of dry eye, the underlying cause is a block or damage to the Meibomian Gland. IPL can correct Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) by gently heating the skin around the glands and clearing obstruction. This in turn increases tear production and improves dry eyes.

IPL for eye styes: If you’ve dealt with eye styes, you understand how unsightly, irritating (and sometimes painful) they can be. These inflamed bumps, which can appear on the eyelid or base of the eyelash, typically present when a hair follicle becomes infected. IPL offers a bladeless and incision-free option to treat eye styes. The light-based energy is used to heat the glands near the follicle to help clear the infection and inflammation thereby reducing or eliminating the bump.

What to Expect

Patients will see improvement after 1 Lumecca treatment, but will see best results following 2-3 treatments. Compared to other IPL devices, Lumecca’s cooling tip and ability to treat larger spot sizes at a fast rate allows for a more comfortable and quicker treatment. Patients can resume normal activities following an IPL treatment. When treating brown spots, patients can expect the spot to darken a few days following treatment and then ultimately slough off.
