Melasma

Melasma is a skin condition which presents as brown of gray-brown spots or patches. Melasma is more common in women and is typically brought on from hormonal changes such as pregnancy or using birth control pills; melasma is often referred to as ‘the mask of pregnancy. Sun exposure and heat can worsen the appearance of melasma or cause melasma that has been lightened or subdued to represent itself. All too often, melasma is treated in the same way other hyperpigmentation is treated, such as sun damage. Some treatments that are suitable for sun damage may actually worsen melasma. For this reason, it’s important to consult with a reputable skin care expert before undergoing treatment.
