Sun damage is a common skin problem for many people. We all love spending time outdoors, and there are times that we aren’t so diligent about making sure our skin is protected from the sun. Unfortunately, the sun can damage skin and lead to dark spots and other issues that tend to become more troublesome with age. Mirabile M.D. Beauty, Health & Wellness has some advice for making sure that you protect and treat your skin properly this summer.

How Does Skin Get Sun Damage?

Being out in the sun without proper protection can lead to a variety of different forms of sun damage. One of the most obvious and immediate signs of sun damage is sunburn. Sunburns are not only painful, but they can be very serious.

The sun also damages the elastin in the skin, which can lead to skin sagging and stretching. Since these changes can take a while to see, you may not start to see the problems until you are seeing other effects of aging.

Sun damage also increases your risk for skin cancer. Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells to form tumors. These tumors can be benign or malignant. Benign tumors are noncancerous, but malignant tumors can cause a lot of problems for people. The most concerning type of skin cancer is melanoma. Melanoma is often curable when treated early, but when it is left untreated, it can spread to other organs, which makes it difficult to treat and control.

Treating Sun Damage with Clear and Brilliant Permea

Treating the effects of sun damage is crucial to maintaining the appearance that you are accustomed to. The earlier you start taking care of your skin, the better you can prevent some of the signs of aging and sun damage. Using Clear + Brilliant, a laser skin treatment, can help you achieve a clearer complexion and a healthy glow. It can also prevent some of the skin damage caused by the sun from occurring at all.

Clear + Brilliant uses laser energy to create millions of microscopic treatment zones in your skin. It replaces damaged skin with healthy tissue that will look younger. While the primary use for Clear + Brilliant is to treat the effects of aging skin, since sun damaged skin suffers much of the same issues, this treatment also works well those dealing with sun damage problems. The Clear + Brilliant Permea handpiece makes the skin more permeable, which allows for topical skin care regimens to work more successfully to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, melasma, and age spots.

This treatment is customizable to your skin concerns. The number of treatments you need will be based on these concerns. That being said, most patients require four to six treatments to get their desired results. At Mirabile M.D., we will discuss your personalized treatment plan with you during your consultation.

Sun Damage Prevention

While the best thing you can do for your skin is prevent exposure to the sun, that isn’t always a practical solution. Instead of avoiding prolonged sun exposure completely, you can focus on always using sunscreen. Sunscreen should have a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30.

You can also prevent sun exposure by wearing clothing that protects you from the sun’s rays. A large hat can be used to shade the face and neck, and you can wear clothing that covers your torso, arms, and legs appropriately while you are out in the sun.

People with fair or freckled skin are at the highest risk for sun damage. If you have fair or freckled skin, it is important that you always use sunscreen when you are exposed to the sun for longer than 15 minutes at a time. Sun protection is very important for young children as well. Be sure to keep your children protected from the harmful rays of the sun to prevent sunburns and other skin damage.
