Hot skincare tips for the season

Forget the sheen that summer’s sweltering humidity often deposits on your face—achieve a beautiful, healthy shine without overhauling your entire regimen to accommodate the calendar’s rhythm. Often switching out one or two products and adding a professional skincare treatment that doesn’t require downtime will yield glowing results.

If you’re stuck in a rut still using February’s skincare routine, it’s time to consider changing it up. Many women complain of an oily, irritated and dull face during warm weather—frequently the result of sticking with products also used in winter.

“Because seasons shift with temperatures, dry air and humidity, it’s especially important to maintain healthy skin,” recommends James Mirabile, M.D., FACOG, founder and owner of Johnson County’s first medical spa. “Think about customizing skincare just like your wardrobe—you wouldn’t wear a heavy sweater in July. Why continue to use a moisturizer that solved dry skin issues in winter during the height of the summer?”

Mirabile M.D. Beauty, Health & Wellness, conveniently located at I-435 & Roe in Overland Park, combines MedCosmetic, Weightloss®, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy for men and women, and gynecology.

Dr. Mirabile’s Proprietary Skincare Collection
MedCosmetic, the medical spa division of Mirabile M.D. Beauty, Health & Wellness, offers Dr. Mirabile’s proprietary skincare collection. Affordably priced, the line is free of the three P’s commonly found in many skincare products—petroleum, phthalates, and parabens.

“Our skincare is a non-toxic solution to keep skin healthy and bright year-round,” says Tama Veltri, LE, MedCosmetic. “The premium line includes everything from a foaming cleanser to a gentle toner and a moisturizer with a powerful sunscreen,
SolarProtect Moisturizer SPF 25.”

Veltri is a NCEA certified esthetician—the highest attainable skincare credential in the United States—and was instrumental in developing the Johnson County Community College esthetics curriculum during her 12 years teaching in the acclaimed program.

Integrity is a Core Value of Team Mirabile
“Today I’m proud to be a member of Team Mirabile where integrity is a core value,” she says. “If we don’t believe a patient will get maximum results from a particular product or service, we are honest. We aren’t in the business of selling—we’re here to help people realize their full beauty, health and wellness potential—inside and out.”

As medical director of MedCosmetic, Dr. Mirabile is onsite daily and available to staff and patients for additional consultation.

“It’s a unique feature not found in most area med spas,” says Veltri. “Many medical directors aren’t easily accessible and have little to no contact with patients, or even the medical spa staff.”

Cosmetic Injectables: Botox, Dysport and dermal filler are safe summertime treatment options. These treatments are highly effective at erasing wrinkles and restoring lost facial volume due to aging and collagen loss.

Prevention is Key to Summer Sun Care
It’s common knowledge that tanning isn’t recommended for many health reasons. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors—just be smart by applying sunscreen to protect your skin. And the first line of defense is using a daily moisturizer with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) to provide a transparent barrier against harmful UVA/UVB rays.

Other Safe-Sunning Tips:
*Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 25. Re-apply every two-three hours, as well as after swimming. Pay particular attention to your skin’s most exposed and vulnerable parts: face, neck, ears, shoulders, back, knees and tops of feet.
*Read and follow the sunscreen manufacturer’s recommendations. Check the sunscreen’s expiration date.
*If applying more than one substance on your skin (such as insect repellent), always put the sunscreen on first. Wait 30 minutes before applying the next substance.
*Remember—no sunscreen provides 100 percent protection. Take precautions by wearing a hat, long-sleeved shirt and pants during extended
periods in the sun.

The MedCosmetic Team
Dr. Mirabile carefully evaluates every product and treatment offered and personally approves all protocols used in the MedCosmetic division. In addition, he handpicks staff to best represent his philosophy of patient care. The MedCosmetic staff includes two registered nurses, four  licensed estheticians and a medical assistant.

The other divisions of Mirabile M.D. include Weightloss, gynecology and bio-identical hormone replacement therapy.

“This is a true one-stop resource for total wellness,” Veltri says, “and frequently our services overlap. It’s imperative to have a collaborative, informed and engaged team of professionals. We’re all passionate about what we do.”
